Time Capsule Series: Constantine
It's always been your choice
I wouldn’t have got away with watching this film due to the big red fifteen logo, now that’s changed let's see what I missed out on.
Two men working in the Mexican desert stumble upon an ancient object buried in the ground. The man who found the object became possessed and set off with abnormal purpose. Back to L.A, Reverend Hennessey waits anxiously in an apartment building for John Constantine, occult detective. The victim is a young woman possessed by a demon, stronger than what the reverend is used to. The demon almost crossing over into the real world raised John's suspicion. He sets off with Chas, his assistant to find answers.
At the hospital visiting his doctor, John is given a stern warning about his health condition. Drowning himself in substances to numb the weight of awareness that comes with his role. His nonchalant behaviour shows that he is very familiar with where he is headed if his life were to come to an end. He then heads over to see his advisor, Gabriel, reminding him to reap what he sows.
He arrives at a members-only club to see Papa Midnite. A powerful mystic and guide, that pledged an oath between both worlds to keep the balance. The club is neutral territory for all souls to discuss business. Midnite tells him that if the demon is that close to the crossroads, someone is making contact with their master. Balthazaar, half-human half-demon also known as a half breed arrives for his appointment with Midnite. As tensions rise between John & Balthazaar, Midnite makes it clear that no fighting shall be done in his house.
Detective Angela Dodson arrives at John's apartment looking for information regarding the death of her sister. Trying his best to cast her away vulgarly, he escorts her through the dark streets after realising they were being followed by dark forces. "God's a kid with an ant farm, he's not planning anything". John explains to Angela that man's time on earth is a wager between God and the Devil to see whose influence will reign, without ever appearing in front of them.
His statement implies that life is but a series of tests and your role is to assess the wisdom you have gained from the choices you have made in your lifetime. This would also imply that there isn’t an eternal paradise or damnation, just a simulation of choices that stack up against you. The assistant influencers such as Balthazaar tend to be in positions of affluence to encourage mayhem and bad decisions. Angels which are also half breeds, help those in need to restore balance in the world. "I saw things humans can't see, shouldn’t see". When we are born our minds have no influence which enables us to see the world and people's true nature. Overtime our perception becomes tainted by certain doctrines and societal pressure.
John takes a quick trip to the underworld to confirm Angela's enquiry about her sister. Beeman, John's right-hand man, finds out why the demon was so close to crossing worlds. He mentions a hidden bible chapter that states a secret society will rule with the aid of Mammon also known as the son of Lucifer. It is said that for Mammon to cross over he would need a powerful psychic and the assistance of God. A strong vessel capable of accommodating such dark and ancient forces. Mammon would have to arrive in this world into a position of great power to disrupt the masses understanding of free will.
"He who possesses the spear of destiny holds the fate of the world in his hands". Studies claim that the spear or Holy Lance was used by the Templars to murder Christ in his rib cage. The spear is believed to have supernatural powers due to the incident and has been sought throughout history, by powerful dictators such as Napoleon and Hitler. "Whatever killed the son of God will give birth to the son of the Devil". Symbolically, the spear represents man's advancement through the animal kingdom.
Even though it has already been written, a wise man makes choices that grant him the most peace.
